Even in my Spike-centric stories I usually write Xander as putting up a decent fight even if he gets his butt kicked. Xander doesn't give up; he'll always pick himself up and try again.
The patois thing was easy in this story. I was brought up in Malawi, I went to school there with kids from Rhodesia and South Africa, and I talk on the phone to White Zimbabweans and South Africans on pretty much a daily basis.
I also speak to Californians on a daily basis, but they tend to be too old to be much help with the teen-speak of Sunnydale.
I'm very behind on your story; I've been keeping more or less up to date with the shorter entries, but I put yours aside until I'd finished my own. Now I can make a start on catching up, although I return to work tonight and my reading time will be fairly limited for the next five days.
