I'm not good at html at all, but I do it by putting [h1] in front of the letters, and [/h1] after them; replacing the [ and ] with < and its mirror image.
h2, h3, and h5 produce different sizes of large letters.
You can use the Rich Text feature in the Post options instead, there's a menu there with things like large text in it, but I don't like using the Rich Text way of posting and haven't used it since LJ changed their interface recently.
