Malawians are slightly batty on the subject of vampires. The first vampire riots in Malawi that I remember were in 1967-68. South Africa had just lent Malawi millions towards the New Capital project; just at the time that Dr Christian Barnard was doing the first heart transplant. A rumour went round that South Africa was sending vampire mercenaries to collect the interest on the loan in the form of blood and human hearts.
The most recent vampire riots were in 2002-03, when the rumour was that Aid Agencies and the Government were colluding to protect vampires in exchange for a share of the vampires' blood harvest. Several people were killed as suspected vampires and the Governor of Blantyre District was stoned and put in hospital as a suspected collaborator.
