In Masai mythology glass eyes actually do have power - but in this I just went for the mundane. Looks real, can't see a damn thing - so looking with it into the eyes of the vampire is risk-free, and he's not going to realise that Xander isn't looking and use threats or actual force to make Xander really look.
I will take Xander to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the reasonably near future, to confront ghosts both metaphorical and literal.
