The Lost Patrol Part 1
Apr. 30th, 2006 12:54 amBack in January I wrote Lonely in the Mountain for
ludditerobot’s Scatterlings and Orphanages ‘Africander’ ficathon. I mentioned at the time that I had an idea for a sequel set in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I didn’t do anything about it then but today has been disastrous on the ‘Tabula Avatar’ front – I wrote fifteen hundred words in which the characters did nothing but debate the ethical issues to do with making armor from the hide of a sentient red dragon, and when I read it through I realized that I had committed the cardinal fanfic sin of being boring – and so I scrapped that, stopped fighting against this particular plot bunny, and let it have a day out to play.
Here is the first chapter of ‘The Lost Patrol’. There will almost certainly be four chapters in all – this isn’t going to be a long story.
inlovewithnight, who was scheduled to write the DRC for the ficathon, has surrendered her claim to me and so this is the official entry for the Democratic Republic of Congo. This part is 2,750 words and the rating would be PG. It might climb later.
Summary: late January 2006. Xander has returned to Uganda, still hurting from the events of ‘Lonely on the Mountain’, and he hears of an influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo who have been driven from their homes by an apparently supernatural peril. On his way to investigate he acquires some supernatural company of his own.
