Belated Happy Birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] hils, [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003, [livejournal.com profile] lisfayte, [livejournal.com profile] lilithn, [livejournal.com profile] captainofidiots, and [livejournal.com profile] brunettepet. It’s a long time since I posted! I'll be posting a stupid, crude, and obscure double drabble later today to compensate.

Song lyrics meme: gacked from [livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer, [livejournal.com profile] cat63, and [livejournal.com profile] daibhid_c

* Put your music player on random.
* Post the first line from the first 32 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
(I’ve cheated slightly and edited out some obscure album tracks, replacing them with songs that I’ve acquired from YouTube with a Firefox add-on).
* Let everyone guess what song and artist the lines come from.
* Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly.
* Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
[livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat can play if she likes – but she’d have an unfair advantage, and so I’ll treat her like FIA treats McLaren and fix it so that she can’t win (ETA - I probably won't need to fix it, as [livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer is so far in the lead). Several of the songs have featured in ‘Tabula Avatar’ but I avoided any that have had their lyrics quoted extensively in the story. I'm screening comments to make it fairer.

1) “I am a member of the council of the Naval Mutiny” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat)

2) “She says her love for me could never die” ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer)

3) “Pray God you can cope”

4) “I always flirt with death”

5) “Maybe when the room is empty” ([livejournal.com profile] miss_186)

6) “All the rain came down on a cold new town as he carried you away” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat and [livejournal.com profile] brunettepet)

7) “Clean shirt, new shoes” ([livejournal.com profile] daibhid_c)

8) “He’s got a brand new car” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat)

9) “I love myself, I want you to love me” ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer has the title and the original artist - but this is a cover [perhaps the most famous cover])

10) “I lived my life in shadow, never the sun on my face” ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer)

11) “Oh rolling and tumbling ain’t done me no harm”

12) “If God had a name what would it be?” ([livejournal.com profile] daibhid_c had the title but not the artist, [livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer got both)

13) “Between a father and a son” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat)

14) “Every step takes a beat of your heart” ([livejournal.com profile] zanthinegirl)

15) “Drive my truck midway to the motorway station” ([livejournal.com profile] brunettepet)

16) “We can dance if we want to” ([livejournal.com profile] miss_186)

17) “‘Look out the left,’ the captain said” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat has the title but not the performer of this particular version)

18) “Once there was a man and he lived to sing the lion song”

19) “Turning into something”

20) “I picture the rainbow” ([livejournal.com profile] cat63)

21) “The wind is in from Africa and last night I couldn’t sleep” ([livejournal.com profile] willowgreen got the title and the original artist, although this version is actually a cover that was performed live with the original performer in the audience as guest of honour).

22) “Alone among the hills and stone” ([livejournal.com profile] zanthinegirl has the artist but not the song, and that gave [livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat the song.)

23) “Harry Truman, Doris Day, Red China, Johnnie Ray” ([livejournal.com profile] daibhid_c has the title but not the artist, [livejournal.com profile] appomattoxco, [livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer, and [livejournal.com profile] booster17 got the artist.)

24) “Love in, love out, find the feeling”

25) “Make me a deal and make it straight” ([livejournal.com profile] appomattoxco)

26) “Out where the river broke” ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer)

27) “All this feels strange and untrue” ([livejournal.com profile] zanthinegirl)

28) “I never was a violent man” ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer)

29) “I'm going to dance you round the floor” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat has the artist but not the title)

30) “I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song” ([livejournal.com profile] daibhid_c)

31) “You know that I would love to see you next year” ([livejournal.com profile] curiouswombat)

32) “I’ve been driving all night my hands wet on the wheel” ([livejournal.com profile] gipsy_dreamer)

5- Punk Rock Princess by Something Corporate
16- Safety Dance by Men Without Hats? I could be projecting; I've been listening to that song for weeks.

That's all I've got, lol.

I think 7 might be "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZTop.
12 is "What if God Was One of Us" by ... um ...
23 sounds like "We Didn't Start The Fire". I should know who that's by.
30 is "New England". Billy Bragg or Kirsty MacColl.

7 correct, 12 title correct, 23 title correct, 30 correct (it's the Billy Bragg original)

There is a Runrig one in there...

Is it 6? It sounds familiar, I can almost here the tune, but I can't quite get it...

No, 6 isn't Runrig - but there was a connection between the two bands.

23 Is Billy Joel if it isn't a cover I never heard.
Everything else has me lost.

All correct but one - except that it's a cover (perhaps the most famous cover) of "I Touch Myself" and it's actually the Billy Bragg original of "New England".

However for 23 you could hardly be more wrong.

Most of the ones I know have already gone, but 23 is definitely Billy Joel and "We Didn't Start the Fire".

And is 9 the Divinyls cover version?

8 makes me think of Tracy Chapman and "Fast Car".

23 correct. The Divinyls version is the original - the two band members co-wrote the song.

1 sounds like something from "HMS Pinafore" by Gilbert & Sullivan--the one that goes "I am the very model of a modern major general"--but I don't know the song title, or if that's even it.

21 is "Carey" by Joni Mitchell.

21 correct, although the version on my player is a live cover from the big concert with Joni as guest of honour where multiple famous artistes performed her songs.

Hmm - I am not all that good at these - so probably won't beat anyone else, anyway.

However -

1. Men They Couldn't Hang - Colours.

6. Big Country, obviously - but it it actually called 'Chance'? I can't remember, even though I can sing the whole thing - and will, if you aren't careful...

8. Feeder - Buck Rodgers?

13. Big Country - Fields of Fire.

17. Joni Mitchell - This Flight?

21. Joni Mitchell as well - can't remember the name.

29. Runrig - from 'In Search of Angels' has a Mary in it somewhere....

31. Maximo Park - Apply some Pressure.

All correct - although 17 isn't the Joni Mitchell original version and you haven't got the title quite right, 21 isn't the Joni Mitchell original either, and really you should know the title of my favourite Runrig track!

6- Big Country, "Chance," but it's "All the rain came down" if that's the right song.

15 - Tim Robinson, "2-4-6-8 Motorway"

Thanks for the birthday greetings. It was a great day.

Correct for both - and yes, I made a transcription error on "Chance". Further down I started actually Googling the lyrics because doing that & pasting them in was quicker and easier than typing them out.

15. 2-4-6-8 Motorway by The Tom Robinson Band
20. The Whole of The Moon by The Waterboys

I think I'm going to kick myself when I find out what number 6 is, because it's ringing bells, but I can't place it.

Aargh! How did I miss 22? I listen to it often - I just didn't notice it on my first read through.

22 - Snow Patrol - Open Your Eyes.

No, it isn't. 27 is Snow Patrol, 22 is someone else. [livejournal.com profile] zanthinegirl recognised who it is.

Sorry - just mixed the numbers up - I can't see up there when I am typing down here!

Actually as 22 is Big Country then I think it might be the music from Restless Natives...

# 14 is Idelwild-- Love Steals us from Lonliness. Love that song.

# 27 is Snow Patrol-- Open your Eyes

I'm pretty sure # 22 is Big Country, but I don't know the title.

Correct with 14

I think you made a typo on the others because you've got them backwards. 22 is Snow Patrol and 27 is Big Country.
