I didn't get the promotion.

I. Didn't. Get. The. Fucking. Promotion.

Which means someone not as good as me will get it. No question. There isn't anyone in my league who could have gone for it; ask [livejournal.com profile] magic_wanderer if you don't believe me. Someone who two weeks ago was coming to me to ask how to do their job (because everybody does, even half of the supervisors) is going to be telling me how to do mine.

Sometimes I don't know why I bother working at that place.

Sorry to hear that

It sucks.
And, indeed, blows.

It does suck. There are alot of irrational things that go with the hiring and promotion process. For example my old boss has passed over several candidates within his department for higher paying jobs and given them to less experienced candidates from other departments or outside the organization. I was one of those candidates passed over and I was already experienced with performing 90% of the functions of the higher paying job. I'm sure he just didn't want to have to hire me for the new job and then have to hire someone else to replace me (especially because he knew I was then working on my graduate degree and would try for an even higher paying job within a couple of years). And that was before 9/11 and the budget cuts which place every open position on a potential chopping block or long delay for being filled. I imagine its worse now.

This and many other things have led to me being severally disillusioned about many aspects of my organization. Now I just try to focus on helping our customers. I hope you have better luck with your career down the road.

Apparently they're not allowed to take the candidate's record into consideration - this would discriminate against external applicants - so they go entirely on the Competency-Based Interview, which consists of three questions only.

So my 6 years experience, more than anyone else by miles, counts for absolutely nothing. They end up with someone who is skilled at Interview Technique but might be totally useless at doing the job itself.

I'd have been taking a massive pay cut if I'd got it, because I get so many bonuses for being absolutely phenomenal at the job I do now. But they had to disregard that.

Ouch, have to categorize that under a special circle of hiring hell. Sounds like we both got screwed.
