But at least they won, right? Even if it was roughly by accident? (That is, I didn't see the game, but they showed a replay of the goal bouncing in off of one of their opponents.)
They played really well in the first half and deserved the goal; but they were dreadful in the second half. If they don't improve a lot they stand no chance of doing well in the competition. They will have to face teams a lot better than Paraguay later.
Exactly. One-nil against Paraguay just wasn't good enough. If England fail to score against Sweden and against Trinidad & Tobago - and after today nobody would bet on them being able to get a shot past Shaka Hislop - and if both those teams beat Paraguay by two goals or more, then England go out.
They weren't bad in the first half, but clearly it was sunny and hot in the second half and that was obviously the problem... so unexpected.
And the obvious solution to our failure to score was to take off one of our goalscorers, thus leaving only one striker at the front. Then, get the rest of the team to hog the English third of the pitch with only periodic optimistic lobs up to said striker for him to head to himself. Argggh. Thank God the Swede is going.
And Yay for T&T. I may well change my tune on Thursday night, though.
I have a horrible feeling that Steve MacLaren will be just as bad.
As I see it there is only one possible reason for having picked Theo Walcott for the squad; he's a kid and so will be able to run around madly in the heat without suffering too badly. So if Ericsson didn't put him on to replace Owen then, against a crap team that was a goal down already, when the hell is he going to put him on? And if he isn't going to put him on why bring him at all?
My mom and my dad used to have a very effective strategy for gaming. They would go to the local Indian casino. My dad had a hundred dollars, my mom had a book. Every half hour she would come to the table where my father was playing cards, take whatever he had over his stake and go back to her book. Eventually my dad would either get tired of the game or lose the stake.

Daughter dear has bet £2 on T&T to win the World Cup at odds of 1,000 to 1 - so she is definitely cheering them on!

Either way they rarely, if ever, lost money.
