Ten fictional women who I think are awesome.

(Meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] sp23, who gacked it from [livejournal.com profile] shipperx, who gacked it from [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup)

01) Modesty Blaise
02) Sister Fidelma (heroine of a series of historical detective novels by Peter Tremayne)
03) Machiko Noguchi a.k.a. Da’dtou-di ( Prey, Hunters’ Planet, & War by Steve and Stephani Perry)
04) Amanda Garrett (Choosers of the Slain, Stormdragon, Sea Fighter, & Target Lock by James Cobb)
05) Niles Etland (The Demon Breed, by James H Schmitz)
06) Charity Selborne (Madam, Will You Talk? by Mary Stewart)
07) Hu San-niang (The Water Margin)
08) Emma Peel (The Avengers)
09) Viconia DeVir (Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, & Baldur’s Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal)
10) Yu Shu-lien (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, played by Michelle Yeoh)

Narrowly missing out were Jaheira, Ellen Ripley, Vi the Vampire Slayer, Ilona Costa Bianchi, Eowyn, Tara, several Mary Stewart heroines from other books, and Beatrice (Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing). Buffy disqualified herself in an alley leading to the police station.

No argument on 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, but I can't help thinking of #4 as Honor Harrington with a little less SF and the serial numbers sawn off. Don't know the others.

Your comment makes me want to read those books :) Good choices, although I am not familiar with a few of them. Glad to see some love for Vi, although she didn't make the top ten (more screen time for us to know her better is a great argument for another series set in the Buffyverse).

I think I only really know Machiko, but thanks for the list of series to look for!

Oh, man, I should have included Ripley on my list. Well, first two movies, Ripley, anyway. She totally rocked.

And I should have qualified my Buffy as Buffy, seasons 1 - 5.

No Harmony?

I'm afraid I'm not really/at all familiar with most of your source materials to comment on the others.

I think you are the coolest for including Hu San-niang!

Ilove Nile Etland - I think I agree that she's my favorite Schmitz heroine. I used to love Telzey Amberdon, and still like Trigger, but Nile is cooler. Of course, Grandma Wattenel (sp?) is wonderful too.

After some thought, I'd pick Rose from Doctor Who. I realize that one's arguable, but at just 19 she shows great imagination, courage and intelligence in the face of all thing weird. I'd also pick Dorothy Gale from the Oz books (not the movie!) Dorothy has a huge amount of pluck and courage, while at the same time maintaining such a sweet disposition and fairness in thought that everyone falls in love with her.
