I can't get no ...

Well, my website passed the 100,000 hits mark 12 hours ago, and I haven't been able to think of a single thing to do to mark the occasion.
I've finished "Come As You Are", but I'm not happy with the balance. It's got a beginning, a middle, and an end; but the end is as long as the beginning and the middle put together, and that's not right at all. The pacing's a little off, too. I like all the bits, but not the whole thing. Bummer.
Oh well.

For instance, one search term that found my 'I am the walrus' story was is a walrus penis an obelisk?
I get quite a few weird things like that; I always wonder why on earth they click on the Google result for me when I can't possibly be what they're looking for.

Date: 2004-11-25 01:29 pm (UTC)I'm re-editing the fic now; the problem is that it was driven by anger and hatred, and that burned out as I wrote. Maybe I'll go watch the TV news and see Tony B. Liar and get re-inspired that way.

Date: 2004-11-25 01:18 pm (UTC)One thing that really pleases me is that so far this month 198 of the visits to the site have lasted more than an hour, and another 163 have lasted between 30 minutes and an hour. Those have got to be devoted readers.
Or maybe people who got so bored that they fell asleep in front of the monitor.

Date: 2004-11-29 10:11 pm (UTC)I read this a few days ago, and my mind is still in a tizzy. 100 thousand?
I've had my web page up for about a year and all totalled I've probably had 4000 hits.
My mind is officially boggled.
Congrats!

Date: 2004-11-29 10:57 pm (UTC)I'm very strict about where I'll allow my fics to be archived. I won't allow "Pandora's Boxer" to be archived anywhere other than my site, for instance.
My chapter titles are often song titles, phrases from songs litter the stories, I quote TV programs and sports results, my oddball style means that some very strange things crop up - all of this means that Google searches for totally unconnected things find my site and for some strange reason the searchers actually visit the site (and thus register as one or more hits) before deciding that I'm not really what they want.
There are links to my site on the Eden Studio BtVS Roleplaying Game official site (they dictated the format of disclaimer I had to use before they'd put up that link) and that pulls in quite a few visitors. I Think I'm the only fic writer who has that particular source of referrals.
And, of course, hits don't equal visitors.
I've had to date 8,730 different visitors, making 16,876 separate visits to the site, and in the process clocking up 106,425 hits and downloading 3.18 Gb of material.
There are 156 pages in my site, so a single fan can clock up a huge number of hits.
And you deserve more exposure, and I'll add a link to your site (and

Date: 2004-11-30 02:56 pm (UTC)I really wasn't hinting for exposure (but I'll take it!) -- I was just amazed at the volume of traffic. That's really astounding. I often get to thinking that this fandom is a pretty small corner of the world, but I see figures like that and realize it's really huge and my meanderings around the web have just scratched the surface of it.
I really appreciate your kindness and your support.
By the way, I finally read "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It's haunting me! What a fabulous concept about The Immortal and the reason for his power over women. I also liked the insights (plus anything that puts Spike in a positive light pushes all the right buttons with me.) I promise to read more.
