Well, I’ve read Issue 40 now. As usual it’s a struggle making sense of it because it’s so hard to recognise who the badly-drawn goblins represent. The effort, once made, isn’t worth it. I can’t be bothered to say any more; instead I’ll do a meme.

I only recognise two of those names. Not really enough to spot a trend... I am so lacking in the pop culture.

Which two? I guess Spike and Inigo Montoya. Am I right?

Exactly right. Can't think of anything they have in common, except being rather cuddly in a prickly way.

Also - you get no credit for guessing Spike!

Few, few do I know...

You like Drow...swordsmen...and the wonderful democracy of Ankh Morpork, where everyone gets to vote, except on grounds of age or not being Lord Vetinari.

Speaker to Animals is skilled with a variable-sword but isn't a person. Swordsbeings?

Judging by the ones I recognise, you like witty/sarcastic characters who Don't Stand For Any Nonsense Thank You.

Indeed so. There are quite a few others who fit that description, and would have been on the list, if it hadn't been restricted to fifteen.

I only recognise 4 of those characters so at a bit of a loss.

Which four? I guess Spike, Inigo Montoya, Angua and Lord Vetinari.

I've added the fandoms now, to make recognition a little easier.

Well, you really don't want to get on their wrong side... (or their hamster's wrong side.)

Why do you torment yourself so by even bothering to read it? I've happily ignored it since the tenth issue.

The main thing that I've taken away from Season Eight is the conviction that Joss Wheddon doesn't have a clue about writing comic books and that I am now prepared to give the Jossless reboot of the movie series a fair chance.

It can't be worse.

As I said in a post in November, when word of the reboot came out:

"Well, even if they cast Lady GaGa as Buffy, William Shatner as Merrick, a real pike as Pike, and have it directed by Uwe Boll, it will be better than the Season 8 comics."

Many of these characters are unknown to me, but of the ones I recognise they all seem to be strong, self-disciplined characters, with a high internal moral code - even if that code doesn't conform to that of the community around them.

Plus, they know how to handle themselves in a fight :-)

Thanks to you and your Judge Dees and Lin Chungs, I have just take delivery of a four volume set of Outlaws of the Marsh, AKA The Water Margin, because -- you know --Shi Chin, the Tattooed Dragon.

When am I going to read it?

Why Ma Joong, btw, and not Chiao Tai or Tao Gan, or poor old Sergeant Hoong?

With only 15 characters to choose from I couldn't include everyone. I like Chiao Tai and Tao Gan, and I wept for Sergeatn Hoong in 'The Chinese Nail Murders', but my favourites are Judge Dee and Ma Joong. Ma Joong is Spike to Chiao Tai's Angel.
